Wilkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome
Welcome to The Well-Noted Traveller!
The blogosphere is already brimming with adventurous folks who travel the globe and share their experiences with loyal readers. No destination is too off-the-beaten-path; no event is too bizarre. They hike the Himalayas, sail with South Seas pirates, or scarier, order Mexican food in Poland.
Not me. Well, except for that one grey chicken burrito and syrupy blue margarita in Krakow, a mistake that could be chalked up to extreme homesickness. Nowadays, as an author and former opera singer, I get my kicks mostly from good books, 19th century opera, and bubblebaths.
I've read Dostoevsky while soaking in a multicolour-stained mess in St. Petersburg, Russia, filling the tub with pans of boiling water during the city's annual hot-water shortage. I've taken the stage to sing at local Swiss concert, cancelling at the last minute when my accompanist choked on a piece of Gruyère cheese. I've even bribed my way across a difficult Bosnian-Croatian border crossing by handing out signed copies of my Talk Dirty slang dictionaries.
Here on The Well-Noted Traveller, I won't tell you how to quit your job and make a living as a travel writer (in fact I'll probably advise you to never even consider it) and I won't let you in on the secrets of scoring first-class upgrades. Instead, I'll muse about my favourite people, places and experiences in Europe and beyond. More than travel tips or must-see lists, I'll share my personal notes on the news, events, history, literature, language, and culture that make a topic wonderfully unique.
American by birth (and girth), I've spent the better part of my adult life in Europe. After living and working in a half-dozen countries including Russia, Slovenia, and Italy, I settled in Lausanne, Switzerland more than a decade ago. Yet despite my taking Swiss citizenship a few years back, you won't find any neutral information here--just my 100% biased opinion.
Thanks for visiting The Well-Noted Traveller.
